SIPTU TAXI BRANCH IN FURTHER TALKS
ON NEW FARE STRUCTURE FOR DUBLIN
Talks on a new fare structure for Dublin taxis are continuing between
SIPTU's Dublin Taxi Branch, Dublin Corporation and the Corporation's
consultants, Goodbody's. Pointing to the steady erosion in incomes for
full-time taxi drivers in recent years, the Union has been pressing the case
for an agreed formula which would give taxi drivers an automatic increase in
pay each year in line with the annual increase in the average industrial
wage.
A further meeting between the parties is scheduled for Thursday (August 30).
SIPTU negotiator, Jerry Brennan, was hopeful that progress was now possible
on this issue and said that the Union was determined to resolve matters as
quickly as possible."When a final set of proposals are available, we will
put them to our members for decision."
In a reference to calls by other bodies for immediate action on the fares
issue, Mr. Brennan declared that the SIPTU taxi drivers would not be rushed
into action before they had the opportunity to consider what was on offer
through the current negotiations.
"As representatives of full-time taxi drivers, we do not see the logic of
giving people with incomes from other forms of employment the right to
decide whether full-time taxi drivers remain in or out of work," he said.
